Why Your "Quick Strip-Out" Could Cost You £10,000 in 3 Minutes.
Everyone loves swinging a sledgehammer. It looks great on Instagram. But if you don't know what you're doing, you are one swing away from a disaster. Here is how the pros at STRUCTURA prep a room before we break a single thing.
1. Find the Stopcock (And Test It) Before you rip out a bathroom or kitchen, find the main water stopcock. Turn it off. Does the water actually stop? If you accidentally snap a pipe and the stopcock is rusted solid, your house will flood with hundreds of gallons of water while you panic and look for a spanner. Test it first.
2. Stop Swinging Blind Walls hide secrets. Mainly, 240-volt electrical cables and pressurized water pipes. Buy a £30 digital wire detector from a hardware store. Scan the wall before you hit it. A sledgehammer through a live wire can be fatal.
3. The "Artex" Warning Does your ceiling have that swirly, textured pattern from the 80s or 90s? That’s called Artex, and before the year 2000, it was often mixed with white asbestos. Do not scrape it. Do not sand it. Get a cheap testing kit online. If it has asbestos in it, pay a pro to remove it safely.
4. Pry, Don't Smash Put the hammer down. If you want to take off skirting boards or door frames, use a flat pry-bar. If you just yank them off the wall, you will pull half the plaster off with it, and you'll have to pay a plasterer to fix your mess.
Don't get carried away, it's not worth the cost...
