Woodwork Rules Amateurs Always Break

Why Your Laminate Floor is Warping (And Other Woodwork Mistakes)

Wood is a living material. It bends, it shrinks, and it expands. If you treat it like plastic, it will ruin your project. Follow these 3 rules to get a STRUCTURA-level finish.

1. Let the Wood Rest (Acclimatize) Did you just buy new laminate flooring or solid wood doors? Do not fit them today. Bring the boxes into the room where they are going to live and leave them flat on the floor for 48 hours. Wood needs to adjust to the temperature of your house. If you fit it freezing cold from the shop, your central heating will warm it up, expand it, and buckle your entire floor.

2. Stop Cutting 45-Degree Corners If you are fitting skirting boards, you will try to cut the internal corners at a perfect 45-degree angle. Don't. Houses are never perfectly square. When you push them together, there will be a massive gap.

  • The Pro Fix: Cut one piece completely straight and push it hard into the corner. Then, cut the shape of the second board so it overlaps the first one. It’s called a "Coping joint," and it hides wonky walls perfectly.

3. Throw Away Cheap Glue Stop buying 99p grab-adhesive from the supermarket. It shrinks and it fails. Go to a builder's merchant and buy a tube of CT1. It costs about £12, but it sticks to anything, cures instantly, and you can literally stick a skirting board to a wet wall with it. It is the only glue the pros use.
